Q.

My current vehicle requires scrapping (MOT failure, accident damage, etc). What do I need to do?

A.

EU legislation is in place to help customers recycle vehicles and Volkswagen Group has appointed Cartakeback to provide recycling facilities via their national network of vehicle recycling centres. These sites ensure that vehicles being scrapped are correctly treated and 85% recycled (in line with the EU legislation).

Should you need to dispose of a Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle (MOT failures or accident damaged cars etc) you can contact Cartakeback on either:

www.cartakeback.com or 0870 850 5301.

Cartakeback will ensure that you are issued with a Certificate of Destruction and will deregister the vehicle with the DVLA to end any responsibilities attached to the vehicle (road tax, SORN etc).

If your Commercial Vehicle was first sold after July 2002 you are entitled to return the vehicle to the manufacturer for recycling, at no cost (free take back). With effect from January 1st 2007, owners of Commercial Vehicles of any age can take advantage of free take back.

Free take back is subject to the following conditions*.

  • The vehicle must be largely complete (contain engine, gearbox, wheels etc).
  • Have no added waste.
  • Be delivered to an Authorised Treatment Facility that is contracted to Volkswagen Group.

*A charge may be levied if the vehicle does not meet the above criteria. Cartakeback can arrange for vehicle collection, but this is not an entitlement of free take back and will be charged to the owner of the vehicle. For more information please contact your nearest Van Centre or visit our Environment section.
